Simplicity for Palm OS® Platform now incorporates the J9 Virtual Machine from IBM.
New Java Virtual Machine gives enhanced functionality to users developing Java applications for the Palm OS Platform.SPRINGFIELD, NEW JERSEY, September 5, 2001-
Data Representations is pleased to announce that Simplicity for Palm
OS® Platform now incorporates the J9 Java virtual machine
(JVM) from IBM. This new virtual machine offers users of Simplicity a faster
and more robust environment for building Java applications that run on the
Palm OS Platform. Through a distribution agreement with IBM, Data Representations
now offers developers the ability to create Java applications for handheld
devices faster than ever before. The new JVM, apart from being smaller and
faster than the KVM, gives programmers the ability to add such advanced
features as color to their application. In addition, the J9 VM includes
a SmartLinker to remove unneeded classes, methods, and fields from your
application and class libraries. This, combined with it's advanced garbage
collection, makes it one of the fastest and most robust VMs available for
the Palm OS Platform.
About the new release
Simplicity for Palm OS Platform allows developers to build applications
graphically, choosing from a palette of parts, and assembling the parts
using visual tools. Written completely using Java Technology, Simplicity
for Palm OS Platform contains a complete-Java-on-Palm OS Platform simulator
capable of interactive testing and debugging of applications written using
Java Technology. The simulator includes full support for the Database, Infrared
Data Transfer, and TCP/IP capabilities found on the Palm OS Platform.
Simplicity for Palm OS Platform is based on the core functionality common to the Simplicity for Java family of products which allows the creation of applications using an interactive graphical approach to user-interfaces as well as program logic. Once the application's user interface is constructed, the Code Sourcerer interviews the developer in plain English, and writes the necessary Java source code to complete the program. Simplicity for Palm OS Platform includes full support for the CLDC APIs as well as the Spotlet API. Users may also add third party components to the tool suite.
Exploiting the network capabilities of the Palm OS Platform, Simplicity for Palm OS Platform allows developers to build a wide range of network based applications. Wireless applications can be built using standard protocols, such as HTTP, or can access network resources directly using sockets.
Simplicity for Palm OS Platform includes a complete software packaging environment, which takes applications from source code to byte code to JAR files to the Palm OS Platform-native .PRC format which can be used to install applications directly on handheld computers.
