The MID Emulator

MID Emulator

The Emulator is a live prototype of a Mobile Information Device. The Emulator uses actual MIDP screens and objects, and reflects how the application may function and behave on a MID Profile Device. All of the controls are active and will respond to user interaction. Different MID Profile Devices may display GUI elements in different ways, but the Emulator follows the MIDP Specification's requirements for layout and provides a good indication of how your application will appear. The MID Emulator may be modified so its capabilities can match different devices. Most of this chapter will discuss the generic display; the latter part of this chapter discusses the MID Emulator's Palm emulation.

The Emulator initially shows a Copyright screen. Whenever the user adds a displayable to the Parts tree of the active MIDlet, the displayable is shown in the Emulator.

MID Profile RMS operations are simulated by the Emulator by creating, reading, and writing information to files in a way which conforms to the MIDP specification.

The Emulator has two main areas: a display and a keypad. The Emulator's keypad may be used to enter text or move the cursor. The keyboard on the computer running Simplicity for Mobile Devices may also be used to interact with the Emulator.

The MID Emulator may be associated with the MIDlet Composer, a Command window, or started from the IDE. Each Emulator is independent and does not effect other Emulators directly.
